Father’s Day At Work!

Sun. June 17, 2018

Happy Father’s Day to all you wonderful dads! Love you pop!

I wanted to sleep in today so I did until 8:30am. I had a half an hour to jot down my journal entry before it was time to get ready. At 9:15 I realized that I made a grave mistake. As I was brushing my teeth the clocked ticked over a minute. At that moment it was clear to me that I was supposed to be walking out the house. I had set my alarm wrong and miscalculated the drive time I needed. I immediately went into a panic trying to leave. By 9:30 I was on the road already late.

I had to be at the pier by 10 but for some reason I kept thinking 10:30. I must have subconsciously wanted to leave later in order to have breakfast. That did not work out. I ran out of the house as if it were on fire. In must have done 80 miles per hour out of the driveway. (Not really.) But once I hit the highway I might have.

I tried my best!

I got to the Little Man parking garage around 10:15. I was not so lucky because as I was getting out of the car she was pulling in. The timing could not have been worse. The plan was to run to meet her but she unknowingly came to meet me. Since she saw me I waited for her so we could walk together. There was no point in trying to hide. It is a mystery as to how I can be early everywhere else but the pier. I hope to one day find out why.

On our way to the pier we stopped at the Kings food market across the street. We needed ice for the cooler of drinks and since I was late I got to hold all of the bag. A minor punishment but I would not let her carry anything even if she wanted to. I am a gentleman. It just as when I was a kid and mother would come home with groceries. I would try to fill up both arms before she tried to grab a single bag. If there were bags left it would be light – bread, paper towel, vegetables – that I would not mind her carrying.

Time to get started!

At the pier 5 minutes later, we set up and got ready for the day. We prepped for the day with the expectancy of over 1,000 people. We were fully stocked and could have gone all night. Too bad our preparation turned out to be for tomorrow. The stars were not alighted for us on this beautiful day.

It was Sunday, Father’s Day, 87 degrees out with no cloud in sight. It was hot but breezy. Everyone was either celebrating at home, at the beach or some water themed park. All of the places I wished for myself to be. The people we expected to show up were nowhere to be found. The day was long, we ate a lot and just hung out. It was tiring because we just sat there but at the same time it was relaxing.

At 10:30pm we officially closed up shop. After packing and cleaning we left at 11:30. The temperature was amazing so the whole drive home I had my windows down enjoying it. I got home a half an hour later and was in bed by 1:15am. Pretty early for a day after the pier.
